What is a PIK loan, and how does it differ from a traditional loan? In this video, we explain what Payment-in-Kind (PIK) loans are, how they work, and the risks and benefits for borrowers and investors.

A Payment-in-Kind (PIK) loan allows the borrower to pay interest by adding it to the loan balance instead of making cash interest payments. As a result, the outstanding debt grows over time until the loan matures or is refinanced. PIK loans are commonly used in leveraged buyouts, private equity transactions, and by companies that need to preserve cash during periods of growth or financial stress.

We'll also discuss why investors should evaluate PIK loans by analyzing cash flow, leverage, interest coverage, debt maturity, and the borrower's ability to repay the growing principal.
