Not all debt is bad. In fact, some debt actually builds wealth — and knowing the difference can change your whole financial picture.

Here's the simplest test I use. Ask yourself: does this debt help me own something that grows in value, or earn more income over time?

A reasonable mortgage on a home you can afford? That's debt working for you. A student loan that leads to a higher-paying career? Often worth it. A small business loan that funds revenue-producing equipment? Same idea.

Now flip it. Credit card balances at 22% interest. Auto loans on cars that lose value the moment you drive off the lot. Buy-now-pay-later on things you'd never buy with cash.

That's debt working against you — quietly, every single month.

The goal isn't to avoid all debt. It's to make sure the debt you carry is doing something for your future self, not your past self.
