The Amex Gold card is better than it's ever been, but $325 a year is still hard to justify for most people. Here are four cheaper alternatives worth checking first.

The Capital One Savor is a no-annual-fee card that earns 3x on entertainment, streaming, groceries, and dining worldwide, just one point less than the Gold but with more everyday categories.

The Citi Strata Premier and Chase Sapphire Preferred both carry a $95 annual fee, but have a $100 hotel credit through their travel portals to offset that. The Strata Premier adds air travel, hotels, gas, EV charging, restaurants, and supermarkets at 3x, while the Sapphire Preferred covers streaming, gas, EV charging, vacation homes, dining, and online groceries at 3x.

The Bilt Obsidian also has a $95 annual fee with $100 in hotel credits through Bilt Travel, but gives 3x on dining, or up to $25,000 in spend on groceries, 2x on travel, and 4% Bilt Cash on every non-housing dollar spent. And what you do with that Bilt Cash can make it the strongest of the four.
