$120,000 of debt.

And here’s the surprising part…

We didn’t pay it off by doing what most people think.

Here are 5 things we DIDN’T do on our debt-free journey:

1️⃣ We didn’t quit eating out.

Fully restricting yourself is a fast track to burnout. Instead, we budgeted for small treats - dinners out, coffee, etc. - so we could enjoy life while still putting the majority of our extra money toward debt. It kept us motivated instead of miserable.

2️⃣ We didn’t start paying debt immediately.

First, we saved a $1,000 emergency fund as a cushion. That way, when life happened (car repair, medical bill, etc.) we didn’t swipe a credit card and undo our progress.

3️⃣ We didn’t keep all of our car payments.

Car loans eat up so much of people’s paychecks and shrink their margin. We knew this was a problem, so we sold one vehicle right away to free up cash. The other payment was tackled on our list of debts.

4️⃣ We didn’t use math and logic alone.

Money problems are behavior problems. We used the debt snowball method - paying off our smallest debt first - because those quick wins kept us fired up to keep going. Sometimes momentum matters more than interest rates.

5️⃣ We didn’t ignore ways to earn more.

Once we got excited about our progress, we went into full hustle mode. My husband worked every bit of overtime he could, and I started my virtual assistant business online. That extra cash sped up our debt payoff way more than penny-pinching ever could, and got us out of the situation so much faster.

Paying off debt doesn’t mean stripping all the joy from your life.
